1. In 2023, Toyota continues to be the best-selling carmaker globally.
◉ In 2023, Toyota Motor sold a record 2 million cars, making it the world’s best-selling automaker for a record-breaking four years.
◉ Thanks in part to record international sales of 8.9 million vehicles, the Japanese automaker recorded a 7.2% increase in group sales globally last year, including those of truck division Hino Motors and small-car manufacturer Daihatsu.
◉ In 2023, sales of Toyota’s parent-only brands, which include Lexus and its nameplate, reached a record 10.3 million units.
◉ Earlier this month, the German competitor Volkswagen Group, ranked second, revealed a 12% increase in sales to 9.2 million vehicles in 2017, signaling a post-pandemic recovery as supply chain bottlenecks lessened.
2. 718 snow leopards can be found in India: SPAI report
◉ The Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India (SPAI) Programme undertook the first-ever population estimation exercise and found that there are around 718 snow leopards in India.
◉ Ladakh has been reported to have the most snow leopards (477), with Uttarakhand (124), Himachal Pradesh (51), Arunachal Pradesh (36), Sikkim (21), and Jammu & Kashmir (9 following).
◉ With the help of two conservation partners, the Nature Conservation Foundation in Mysuru and WWF-India, as well as all the states that fall under the snow leopard range, the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) served as the exercise’s national coordinator.
3. Punjab Chief Minister Dismissed Sadak Suraksha Force
◉ The “Sadak Suraksha Force” is a new project that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has started to enhance traffic flow and lower the number of traffic accidents in the state.
◉ The force’s objectives are to safeguard citizens and improve traffic flow throughout the state.
◉ To ensure public safety, a force known as the “Sadak Suraksha Force” consisting of 5,000 personnel and 144 vehicles will be stationed every 30 kilometers along the route.
◉ Based on current data, road accidents in Punjab claim the lives of 17–18 persons every day, or over 500 deaths monthly and around 6,000 deaths annually.

4. India drops eight spots on Transparency International’s measure of perceived corruption.
◉ The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2023 was produced by Transparency International (TI). India’s position in the CPI dropped eight spots to 93rd, from 85th in 2022.
◉ Transparency International’s index, which is based on opinions from experts and businesspeople, ranks 180 nations and territories according to perceived levels of corruption in the public sector.
◉ A country is rated from 0 to 100, where 100 represents extreme cleanliness and 0 represents extreme corruption.
◉ India received a total score of 39 in 2023 as opposed to 40 in 2022.

5. Major Restrictions Are Implemented by RBI on Paytm Payments Bank
◉ Paytm Payments Bank has been instructed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to stop accepting deposits and credit transactions on or before February 29, 2024.
◉ This action is the result of continued supervisory concerns and repeated non-compliance within the bank, generating worries about the potential effects on the bank’s clientele.
◉ Exercising its authority under section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has mandated that, except from interest, cashbacks, or refunds that may be credited at any time, no additional deposits, credit transactions, or top-ups shall be permitted in any customer accounts, prepaid instruments, wallets, or FASTags after February 29.

7. Jay Shah has been reappointed as the secretary of the ACC Indian Cricket Board (BCCI). For the third time in a row, Jay Shah was named president of the Asian Cricket Council.
◉ The ACC Annual General Meeting in Bali on Wednesday, January 31, unanimously approved his reappointment as the head of the continental body.
◉ In January 2021, Jay Shah took over as the Asian Cricket Council’s president, succeeding Nazmul Hassan in the role for the first time.
◉ He was given an extension to serve as ACC president till January 2024. Jay Shah became the youngest administrator to assume the position of ACC chief in 2021, having turned 32 years old.
