1. India gains a second foreign port when the MEA approves the Sittwe pact.
◉ India now has the authority to run Sittwe, a second overseas port in Myanmar, in addition to Chabahar.
◉ An agreement to transfer management of the entire port situated on the Kaladan River to India Ports Global (IPGL) has been authorized by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
◉ The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways owns all shares in IPGL.
China and India are fighting each other to gain more economic clout in the Indian Ocean. Ports are now essential in this competition. Particularly China has been actively pursuing the acquisition of operating rights for multiple ports.
2. India wants nuclear power to reach 100 GW by 2047: AEC
◉ India intends to significantly enhance its nuclear power generation from 8,000 MW to 1 lakh MW by 2047.
◉ A K Mohanty, the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, emphasized this objective during the publication of a study on energy transitions.
◉ According to him, 3 GW of nuclear power would come from breeder reactors, 17.6 GW from light water reactors constructed with international assistance, and 40–45 GW from pressurized heavy water reactors.

3. Zimbabwe introduced a new currency backed by gold to combat inflation.
◉ The central bank of Zimbabwe has introduced a new gold-backed “structured currency” in an attempt to curb the nation’s exorbitant inflation and stabilize its long-collapsing economy.
◉ Zim Gold (ZiG), the new currency, will be backed by gold, rare minerals, and foreign currencies, according to Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor John Mushayavanhu.
◉ He also unveiled the new banknotes, which are available in eight denominations ranging from one to 200 ZiG. The goal of the initiative is to promote “simplicity, certainty, predictability” in Zimbabwe’s financial operations.
◉ Zimbabwe’s iconic Balancing Rocks, which were previously depicted on the old notes, are depicted with a representation of gold ingots being struck on the new ones.
4. EU and India collaborate to support entrepreneurs in the field of EV battery recycling
◉ To facilitate matchmaking, the European Union (EU) and India have opened up an Expression of Interest (EoI) for entrepreneurs engaged in battery recycling technologies for electric vehicles (EVs).
◉ The purpose of the matchmaking is to strengthen the collaboration between startups in the clean and green technologies space and SMEs from Europe and India.
◉ The targeted knowledge and skills exchange will play a key role in driving the EU’s and India’s transition to carbon neutrality and the circularity of rare materials.
5. Just 57 companies—those involved in the production of oil, gas, coal, and cement worldwide—are accountable for 80% of global greenhouse gas emissions since 2016.
◉ The analysis shows that, despite governments’ commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Paris, the majority of mega-producers increased their output of fossil fuels and related emissions in the seven years following that climate agreement, compared with the seven years prior. The researchers examined 122 of the largest historical climate polluters in the world and discovered that, of them, 65% of state entities and 55% of private-sector companies had increased their production.

6. In FY24, REC approved a record-breaking Rs 3.59 lakh crore loan.
◉ State-owned REC Limited saw a 33.66 percent increase in loan sanctioning from 2023 to 2024, totaling a record Rs 3.59 lakh billion.
◉ It had approved a credit of Rs 2.68 lakh crore in the previous fiscal year, 2022–2023.
◉ 1.36 lakh crore of the Rs 3.59 lakh crore amount came from “renewable energy sanctions” for environmentally friendly initiatives.
◉ Loan disbursements of Rs 96,846 crore were made in FY’23; this represents a 66.72 percent increase in disbursements.
◉ The company’s loan book stood at Rs 5.09 lakh crore as of March 31, 2024, an increase of 17.13 percent from Rs 4.35 lakh crore in FY’23.

7. Appointed as national women’s hockey coach is Harendra Singh.
◉ Hockey India has chosen Harendra Singh, a former Indian hockey player and recipient of the Dronacharya Award, to lead the senior national women’s hockey team.
◉ His appointment as coach will last until the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.
◉ Holland’s Janneke Schopman will be replaced by Harendra Singh.
◉ After the Indian team was unable to secure a spot at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Schopman, a former hockey player for the Netherlands, announced her resignation as the national women’s team coach last month.

10. Tata introduces First private earth surveillance satellite launched in India
◉ In partnership with Satellogic, Tata Advanced Systems (TASL), a fully owned subsidiary of Tata Sons, launched TSAT-1A, the nation’s first privately constructed sub-meter resolution earth observation satellite.
◉ SpaceX launched the satellite from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.
◉ The satellite was put together at the Karnataka headquarters of TASL. Elon Musk’s SpaceX completed its first Bandwagon flight with the launch of 11 satellites in all.
◉ High-resolution satellite photos with low latency delivery will be made available by TSAT-1A. One of its primary uses is anticipated to be the Indian military.
