1. Tamil Nadu receives a $300 million loan from the World Bank to support 21 Urban Local Bodies.
◉ The Board of Executive Directors at the World Bank has authorized a new program aimed at helping Tamil Nadu and giving almost 2 million people improved and increased access to city water and sewage services.
◉ Twenty-one Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) will get assistance from the $300 million Tamil Nadu Climate Resilient Urban Development Program to modernize their delivery systems and offer customers high-quality, cost-effective water supply and sewage services.
◉ With the use of the blended financing instrument of Program-for-Results (PforR) with Investment Project Financing (IPF), the $300 million loan from the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) will directly link the disbursement of funds to the achievement of results while providing technical assistance.
2. The Ministry of Rural Development and JioMart Signed an Agreement to Sell Products to Self-Help Groups
◉ The Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) and Reliance Retail’s JioMart have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to expand the reach of the items made by self-help groups (SHGs) affiliated with the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM).
◉ This will enable SHGs to sell handlooms and handicrafts, including traditional textiles, pantry items, home décor, and cosmetics, on JioMart under the MoRD’s SARAS collection brand.
◉ Through this partnership, SHGs will be allowed to join JioMart’s e-commerce platform as vendors. Through this program, MoRD’s SARAS collection provision will be made available to a wider range of consumers.

3. Angola is leaving OPEC.
◉ After quitting Ecuador in 2020 and Qatar in 2019, Angola is leaving the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on January 1, 2024.
◉ Angola, a 2007 OPEC member, produces approximately 1.1 million barrels per day, whereas the organization as a whole produces 28 million barrels per day.
◉ Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Venezuela, Iran, and Iraq formed OPEC in 1960. Angola became a member in 2007.
◉ Since 2017, Angola has been a part of the OPEC+ group, which manages the market in collaboration with Russia and other non-members.

4. In 2024–2025, Fitch projects India to be among the fastest-growing countries.
◉ According to Fitch Ratings, India is predicted to have robust GDP growth of 6.5% in 2024–2025, placing it among the fastest-growing nations in the world. In the current fiscal year 2023–24, 6.9% is projected to be GDP growth.
◉ According to high-frequency statistics, demand for cement, energy, and petroleum goods will all continue to be high in 2023—well above levels seen before the Covid-19 pandemic.
◉ Steel demand would rise in tandem with India’s increasing infrastructure spending. Despite our estimate of deceleration following substantial growth in 2023, car sales will continue to rise.
◉ India’s economy is currently the fifth largest in the world, behind that of the US, China, Germany, and Japan. India is expected to become the second-largest economy in the Asia-Pacific region by 2030, surpassing Japan’s GDP.

5. Karnataka purses 2023’s National Energy Conservation Award
◉ In the State Designated Agency (SDA Group-1) category, Karnataka won first place at the Delhi-hosted National Energy Conservation Awards – 2023 (NECA 2022).
◉ The prizes were presented in conjunction with National Energy Conservation Day by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
◉ For three years in a row, Karnataka has been ranked as the top-performing State in India and has received the highest score (SEEI 2020, SEEI 2021–2022, and SEEI 2023).
◉ In recognition of the state’s accomplishments in energy conservation, President of India Droupadi Murmu presented the award to KP Rudrappaiah, Managing Director, Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited.
6. The SASTRA Ramanujan Awards for 2022 and 2023 went to Yunqing Tang and Ruixiang Zhang, respectively.
◉ At the SASTRA campus in Kumbakonam, mathematicians Yunqing Tang and Ruixiang Zhang of the University of California, Berkeley, respectively, received the SASTRA-Ramanujan Awards for 2022 and 2023.
◉ Former Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology T. Ramaswami presented the honors, praising the brilliance of renowned Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan and emphasizing the achievements’ continued significance to the modern world.
◉ Established by SASTRA in 2005, the award recognizes individuals under the age of thirty-two who have made exceptional contributions to mathematics and comes with a citation and a monetary prize of USD 10,000.

7. The Iranian navy expands its arsenal with the advanced “Talaeieh and Nasir” cruise missiles.
◉ The Iranian navy has expanded its armament with advanced cruise missiles made in the country.
◉ The naval installation in the southern Iranian port of Konarak, around 1,400 kilometers (850 miles) southeast of Tehran, is now home to both Talaeieh and Nasir cruise missiles. These bases are situated close to the Indian Ocean.
◉ The Talaeieh is described as “fully smart” and has a range of over 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). ◉ During flight, the cruise missile can change its target.
