1. Prime Minister Modi opens the CLEA-CASGC 2024 Conference.
◉ At Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the Commonwealth Attorneys and Solicitors General Conference (CASGC) 2024, organized by the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA).
◉ “Cross-Border Challenges in Justice Delivery” is the conference theme.
◉ Among the significant topics covered in this conference were executive accountability, the ethical aspects of legal practice and judicial transition, as well as a review of contemporary legal education.
◉ Attorneys general and solicitors general from the Commonwealth countries in Africa, the Caribbean, and Asia-Pacific, as well as several international delegations, attended this conference.
2. India introduces UPI Payments at Paris’s Eiffel Tower
◉ In a major step toward achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal of globalizing UPI, India has formally launched the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) at the famous Eiffel Tower in Paris.
◉ With this endeavor, France will become the first nation in Europe to use India’s UPI for retail transactions, following the agreement on digital payments inked in July of the previous year between India and France.
◉ To make it easier for UPI payments to be accepted in France, NPCI International Payments (NIPL) has teamed up with Lyra, a proximity payments and e-commerce firm based in France. Starting with the Eiffel Tower, the strategic partnership guarantees a smooth integration of the UPI payment method.
3. Self-balancing e-scooters are Used by Uttarakhand Police in Smart Patrols
◉ Four state-of-the-art self-balancing electric scooters have been flagged off at the Police Headquarters by Uttarakhand’s Director General of Police, Abhinav Kumar, to patrol the bustling streets of Haridwar.
◉ Police will use self-balancing scooters to patrol Haridwar for the protection of both tourists and locals.
◉ These environmentally friendly electric scooters, which were donated by Utkarsh Small Finance Bank, can maneuver through small streets, giving police officers an efficient way to keep an eye on the city’s congested neighborhoods, walking trails, and Ganga ghats.

4. Indians’ Brand Guardianship Index 2024 is topped by Mukesh Ambani.
◉ According to Brand Finance’s Brand Guardianship Index 2024, chairman and managing director of Reliance Industries Limited Mukesh Ambani is placed second internationally and first among all Indians.
◉ Employers, investors, and the general public are the stakeholders whose needs are balanced by CEOs who are sustainably creating corporate value, as recognized by the Brand Guardianship Index.
◉ Ambani was placed higher than significant international figures like Elon Musk of Tesla, Tim Cook of Apple, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, Sundar Pichai of Google, and N Chandrasekaran of Tata Group, among many others.

5. In January, UPI transactions hit a record of Rs 18.41 trillion: The NPCI Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has had a great start to 2024, with transaction spending surpassing ₹18 lakh crore and reaching a new peak.
◉ In January, transactions of ₹18.41 lakh crore were completed, which is about 1% more than the previous record of ₹18.23 lakh crore set in December 2023.
◉ According to data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the value of transactions increased by 42% year over year. With 1,202 crore transactions in January, the UPI network’s transaction count stayed constant month over month. There were 52% more transactions than there were a year ago.
6. The government plans to issue 3,500 crore sovereign gold bonds in fiscal year 25.
◉ For the 2018 fiscal year, the Indian government has decided to significantly boost the issuance of Sovereign Gold Bonds (SGB).
◉ From ₹1,500 crore in the fiscal year that ended on March 31, 2023, to a substantial ₹3,500 crore for the fiscal year 2024–2025, the allocation for SGBs has more than doubled.
Interestingly, World Gold Council data shows that despite the runaway prices suppressing demand, gold imports increased by 20% to 781 tons last year.
◉ The actual domestic gold demand, which still hovers around 700–750 tonnes annually, is mostly unaffected by the SGB’s issue.
7. By September 2023, digital payments will have increased 10.94 percent yearly: RBI
◉ According to the RBI’s index, which gauges the uptake of online transactions, digital payments nationwide increased by 10.94% in the year ending in March 2023.
◉ By the end of September 2023, the RBI’s Digital Payments Index (RBI-DPI) was 418.77, up from 377.46 in September 2022 and 395.57 in March 2023.
◉ All metrics show an increase in the RBI-DPI index, with the growth of payment enablers, payment performance, and consumer centricity throughout the nation being the main drivers of this growth.
◉ In March 2018, the central bank declared that it would be creating a composite RBI-DPI to gauge the level of digitalization of payments throughout the nation.

◉ Shantanu Sengupta of Bandhan Bank will vacate his position as Head. He will, however, help the bank through a seamless transition and depart the company in early FY2024–2025 to seek possibilities outside the bank.
◉ Nair, an accomplished individual with more than thirty years of expertise in banking and financial services, will spearhead Bandhan Bank’s home finance division in addition to overseeing the retail lending franchise and distribution.

9. The world record for the longest duration in space is set by a Russian cosmonaut.
◉ According to Russia Space Agency Roscosmos, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko has surpassed the global record for the most total time spent in space.
◉ The 59-year-old Russian has now surpassed fellow countryman Gennady Padalka, who established the previous record in 2015 with 878 days, 11 hours, 29 minutes, and 48 seconds, by spending more than 878 days and 12 hours in space.
◉ Since 2008, Kononenko has completed five trips to the International Space Station.
◉ On September 15, 2023, Kononenko launched with fellow Russian astronaut Nikolai Chub and NASA astronaut Loral O’Hara to the International Space Station (ISS).

10. Exercise Vayu Shakti-2024 to be conducted by the Indian Air Force
◉ On February 17, 2024, the Indian Air Force will carry out Exercise Vayu Shakti-24 at the Pokhran Air to Ground Range, which is close to Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
◉ Exercise Vayu Shakti’s most recent iteration took place on February 16, 2019.
◉ Joint operations with the Indian Army will also be demonstrated during the drill.
◉ This year, 121 aircraft, including the native Tejas, Prachand, and Dhruv, will take part in the exercise. The Rafale, Mirage-2000, Sukhoi-30 MKI, Jaguar, Hawk, C-130J, Chinook, Apache, and Mi-17 are among the other aircraft that will be involved.
