Current Affairs of 4th August – National News
1. To increase package delivery, Amazon and Indian Railways signed a contract.
◉ To improve its delivery services throughout the nation, Amazon India and Indian Railways have reached a partnership arrangement.
◉ Amazon will be able to ship items on more than 110 intercity routes thanks to this cooperation, guaranteeing one- to two-day delivery for its customers.
◉ In 2019, it became the first online delivery business to collaborate with the Indian Railways to develop a rail-based expedited transit offering.
◉ One of the factors that allow the business to promise 1-day and 2-day delivery to customers in the country’s interior is Amazon. More than 110 intercity lines are now being worked on with Railways.
2. The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has recognized more than 75,000 startups, marking an important milestone for India as it celebrates its 75th anniversary of independence.
◉ In his Independence Day speech from the Red Fort on August 15, 2015, Prime Minister Modi spoke of “a new India that draws on the entrepreneurial potential of its people.”
◉ Of the total recognized startups, about 12% are in the IT sector, 9% are in the healthcare and life sciences sector, 7% are in the education sector, 5% are in the professional and business services sector, and 5% are in the agricultural sector.
3. The 4th ONGC Para Games were opened by Hardeep Singh Puri in New Delhi.
◉ The fourth iteration of the ONGC Para Games was launched at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex in New Delhi by Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
◉ Participants in these Games represent almost 275 Persons with Disabilities (PwD) from across the nation.
◉ All of these people work for one of eight central public oil and gas corporations.
◉ The ONGC Para Games’ inaugural event took place in 2017.
4. IOCL and Bangladesh agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding to supply emergency petroleum products.
◉ A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the emergency delivery of petroleum products via Bangladeshi territory to India was signed by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and the Bangladesh Roads and Highways department in Dhaka.
◉ This is a temporary structure to help with the urgent need for petroleum products owing to the devastation from the Assam floods this year.
◉ Oil tankers will enter from Meghalaya and travel into Bangladeshi territory on their way to Tripura. For use of Bangladeshi land, the ◉ IOCL shall be responsible for paying all administrative costs, fees, and local taxes, including road usage fees.
5. Airbus and GMR Group have a contract for airplane maintenance engineering.
◉ Young engineers will receive training in airplane repair thanks to a contract that European aircraft giant Airbus has inked with the GMR Group.
◉ At the GMR School of Aviation in Hyderabad, the GMR Group will deliver the fully integrated aircraft maintenance engineer (AME) licensure curriculum.
◉ The four-year program consists of two years of classroom instruction, two years of maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) training at GMR Aero Technic in Hyderabad, and two years of training specific to each aircraft type.
6. IOC and NTCA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to relocate cheetahs from Africa to India.
◉ For the trans-continental migration of cheetahs from Africa to India, the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) and Indian Oil Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding.
◉ The IOC will provide Rs 50.22 crore over four years for the project, as per the MoU. The project now costs Rs 75 crore in total.
◉ As part of this research, 8–10 cheetahs would be airlifted into Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh from Namibia and South Africa as a source population.
7. Hindustan Unilever Limited and NIESBUD collaborated to promote entrepreneurship.
◉ Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) and the National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD) have signed a memorandum of understanding. It was signed with the intention of helping young people develop their entrepreneurial talents and finding new areas where people may work together.
◉ The alliance would significantly advance nano and microentrepreneurship development in the nation by increasing employment generation and generating sustainable livelihood prospects.
Banking
8. The trade deficit reached record levels of USD 31 billion in July.
◉ India’s goods trade imbalance increased significantly in July, reaching a brand-new high of USD 31.02 billion.
◉ The previous record high for the trade imbalance was reached in June when it was USD 26.18 billion.
◉ At USD 10.63 billion, the deficit in July 2021 was almost one-third less than it was the previous month.
◉ According to the trade ministry, goods imported in July totaled USD 66.26 billion, up from USD 46.15 billion in the corresponding month previous year.
◉ Despite July’s subpar export result, merchandise exports were predicted to “comfortably” surpass USD 500 billion in FY23.
In FY22, India exported goods worth a total of USD 429.2 billion. Exports have reached USD 156.41 billion so far in FY23.

9. Appointment of Ravinder Takkar as Chairman of Vodafone Idea
◉ With effect from August 19, Ravindra Takkar has been named chairman of Vodafone Idea Limited by the board of directors.
◉ As chairman, Ravinder Takkar, who is currently the MD and CEO of VIL, will use his extensive, over three-decade-long experience to lead the business.
◉ Himanshu Kapania was replaced by Ravinder Takkar.
10. As the new Central Vigilance Commissioner, Suresh N. Patel
◉ Suresh N. Patel, the current vigilance commissioner and former CEO of Andhra Bank, has been named the new head of the Central ◉ Vigilance Commission by the government.
◉ Along with former IAS officer Praveen Kumar Srivastava, former Intelligence Bureau Director Arvind Kumar has been appointed as a vigilance commissioner.
◉ A year after the position became vacant, Central Vigilance Commissioner Suresh N. Patel was chosen for the position.

11. In the Atlantic Ocean, India’s navy and France’s navy engaged in training.
◉ On July 29 and 30, the guided-missile frigate INS Tarkash of the Indian Navy participated in a maritime partnership exercise (MPX) in the North Atlantic Ocean alongside French navy vessels.
◉ Following a resupply at sea, the INS Tarkash and the French Fleet Tanker FNS Somme engaged in coordinated air operations with the maritime surveillance aircraft Falcon 50, participating in several mock missile engagements and air defence manoeuvres.
12. India will take part in the Australian combat training exercises “Pitch Black 2022”
◉ India will participate in the 17-nation, massive air warfare exercise “Pitch Black 2022,” which will take place in Australia’s Northern Territory.
◉ India will take part in the “Pitch Black” exercise, the Australian government has said. The exercise will involve around 100 aircraft and 2,500 military personnel from 17 different countries. The training will occur between August 19 and September 6.
◉ Australia, Canada, India, France, Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and the United States are among the nations taking part this year.
