SSC Stenographer is a national level Competitive Entrance Exam conducted by Staff Selection Commission for the recruitment of Grade C and Grade D jobs.

It is the well-reputed organization under the Government of India which is responsible for recruiting the talented candidates for various jobs in different departments of Indian Government and its Subordinate Offices. SSC headquarter is situated in New Delhi. In the present time, the Staff Sectional Commission have 7 Regional offices at Mumbai, Allahabad, Guwahati, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore and It also consists two Sub-Regional Offices at Chandigarh and Raipur. Regional Director is the head of each regional offices of SSC and Deputy Director is the head of every sub-regional offices of SSC.

SSC Stenographer Job Profile

Staff Selection Commission recruits Stenographers in various offices under two Grades – C and D. The specific nature of a Stenographer’s work varies because itdepends upon where you are posted.

  • Stenographer Grade C candidates get work mostly in Delhi at Ministries/Departments of Central Government.
  • Stenographer Grade D candidates are grouped under Group X and Group Y.
    • In Group X, Stenographers work in Departments of Central Government located primarily in Delhi.
    • In Group Y, Stenographers work in Departments of Central Government located throughout India.

  1. Speech Writing –
    Stenographers, first of all, work with assigned senior officers and note down any speech given by the officer. In addition, their job is to do this efficiently as such speech details can be important governmental records.
  2. Press Conference Briefing –
    Stenographers also attend press conferences along with assigned officer or minister. Because of their presence, they can note down all the details and speeches of the conference. This allows the Government, consequently, to use Stenographers for help in making press releases of the same.
  3. Minister/Officer Assisting –
    Another work for stenographers is to assist the assigned officers and ministers in preparing speech. Since they are involved in various governmental proceedings, they know important information about it useful for the officer/minister.
  4. Public Relations Helping –
    In addition, stenographers make notesdaily. These notes are about various governmental departments and their stands on issues. This information needs to reach public and so stenographers help Public Relations Officersby knowing these details.

SSC Stenographer Exam Pattern

The SSC Stenographer examination will be conducted in 2 different levels. The first level is Grade C and D exam that comprises of MCQs and is conducted online. After this exam has been conducted, an exam to test your skill sets in various domains is conducted by SSC.

SSC Stenographer Syllabus

SSC Stenographer, it is important to know the detailed SSC Stenographer Syllabus. General Awareness, General Intelligence/Reasoning and English Language are the three major sections a candidate need to be proficient in for Paper-1 of SSC Stenographer Exam. For Paper-2, i.e. skill sets, you have to write dictated words:

  • 80 words per minute (w.p.m.) for the post of Stenographer Grade D and
  • 100 w.p.m. for the post of Stenographer Grade C.

This is to be done both on computer and on paper.
