1. The NITI Aayog and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in India have released a handbook on sustainable urban plastic waste management.
- To encourage sustainable management of plastic waste in the country, NITI Aayog and UNDP India have teamed to release the ‘NITI Aayog-UNDP Handbook on Sustainable Urban Plastic Waste Management.’
- The Handbook contains 18 case studies/best practises and examples from Indian cities, as well as four from Southeast Asia, that face similar infrastructure and waste concerns.
2. The Adani Group has taken over the operations and management of Thiruvananthapuram Airport in Kerala.
- On October 14, 2021, the Adani Group formally took over the operation, management, and development control of Thiruvananthapuram’s international airport.
- The first of Kerala’s four international airports is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport.
3. Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Channi has launched the ‘Mera Ghar Mere Naam’ scheme to grant property rights to Punjabis.
- On October 17, 2021, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Channi unveiled a new initiative called ‘Mera Ghar Mere Naam’, which intends to give residents residing in dwellings within the ‘Lal Lakir’ of villages and cities proprietary rights.
- Lal Lakir is a land area that is a part of the village settlement and is only used for non-agricultural uses.
4. India and Russia sign a historic memorandum of understanding on collaboration in the coking coal sector.
- India has opened yet another door in its strategic energy partnership with Russia. Ram Chandra Prasad Singh, the Union Minister of Steel, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Nikolay Shulginov, Russia’s Minister of Energy, for partnership in the mining and steel industries, with a special focus on coking coal.
- The initiative is part of India’s National Steel Policy 2017, which aims to increase steel production to 300 million tonnes by 2030 while also working on forward and backward integration.

5. Sri Lanka is seeking a $500 million credit line from India in order to purchase fuel.
- Sri Lanka’s government has requested a USD 500 million credit line from India to pay for crude oil purchases, as the island nation faces a serious foreign exchange crisis following the pandemic’s impact on tourism and remittances.
- The USD 500 million credit line is part of an economic partnership agreement between India and Sri Lanka.
6. The Lucy mission was launched by NASA to examine the Jupiter Trojan asteroids.
- The US space agency NASA has launched the ‘Lucy Probe,’ a first-of-its-kind mission to examine Jupiter’s Trojan asteroids.
- Lucy’s mission will last 12 years, during which time the spacecraft will pass by eight old asteroids to learn more about the solar system’s evolution. One main-belt asteroid and seven Jupiter Trojan asteroids will be among them.
7. COVID-19 halts decades of progress in the fight against tuberculosis, with India bearing the brunt of the damage, according to the World Health Organization.

8. In Jupiter’s moon ‘Europa,’ Hubble discovers evidence of persistent water vapour.
- The presence of persistent water vapour in ‘Europa,’ Jupiter’s ice moon, has been discovered by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope Observatory. However, a water vapour atmosphere can only be found in one hemisphere.
- The discoveries could aid in the investigation of whether Europa’s atmosphere is suitable for life.

- William Shatner, a legendary Canadian actor, has become the world’s oldest astronaut.
- On October 13, 2021, the 90-year-old Shatner was launched into space on Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket.
10. China sends three astronauts on the historic Shenzhou-13 crewed mission, which will last six months.
- The Shenzhou-13 crewed mission, China’s first long-duration stay aboard, has been launched by the Chinese space programme.
- The three-person crew is slated to spend six months in orbit, breaking the previous record for Chinese astronauts in space.
11. Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Store, takes office.
- With effect from October 14, 2021, Jonas Gahr Store, the Leader of the Norwegian Labour Party, has assumed the position of Prime Minister of Norway.

- Sebi, the capital markets regulator, has formed a four-member high-powered advisory committee on settlement orders and offence compounding.
- Vijay C Daga, a former judge from the Bombay High Court, will chair the committee. Former law secretary in the Ministry of Law and Justice, PK Malhotra; ex-Chairman of Deloitte Haskins & Sells LLP, PR Ramesh; and DN Raval, Partner at Raval & Raval Associates, are the other members of the panel.

14. The Reserve Bank of India has approved Pradeep Kumar Panja’s appointment as Chairman of the Karnataka Bank.
- With effect from November 14, Karnataka Bank Ltd has received clearance from the Reserve Bank of India to nominate Pradeep Kumar Panja, an Independent Director of the bank, as part-time non-executive Chairman for a three-year term.
- He will take over from P Jayarama Bhat, whose term ends on November 13.

15. India won the 2021 SAFF Championship with a 3-0 victory over Nepal.
- On October 16, 2021, at the National Football Stadium in Male, Maldives, India defeated Nepal 3-0 to win the 2021 SAFF Championship final.
- The Indian men’s national football team has won the SAFF Championship for the eighth time. The team has previously won the championship in 1993, 1997, 1999, 2005, 2009, 2011, and 2015.

- While competing against 96 teams representing special forces and regiments from around the world in the Cambrian Patrol Exercise in the United Kingdom, the Indian Army won a gold medal.
