1. Amazon India and NIFientreC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to support grassroots businesses.
- Amazon India has signed an agreement with the National Innovation Foundation’s (NIF) NIF Incubation and Entrepreneurship Council (NIFientreC) for the online distribution of grassroots innovations, student creativity-based innovations, and outstanding traditional knowledge-based ready-to-market products.
- The goal is to boost grassroots innovation, the local economy, and rural India’s livelihoods. Amazon and NIFientreC will work together to offer training programmes and stimulate grassroots innovation with important stakeholders in the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem, including central and state government partners.
2. The Cabinet has approved a Rs. 1,500 crore infusion into the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited.
- The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited will receive a cash injection of Rs 1500 crore from the Union Cabinet (IREDA). It will support the creation of 10,200 jobs per year while also reducing carbon emissions by 7.49 million tonnes per year. In the last six years, the IREDA’s portfolio grew from 8,800 crores to 28,000 crores, indicating that it played a significant role in the sector of renewable energy.
- IREDA is a non-banking financial institution that promotes, develops, and provides financial assistance for initiatives involving new and renewable energy sources.

3. According to the UNCTAD’s Investment Trends Monitor, FDI flows to India fell by 26% in 2021.
- According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development’s (UNCTAD) ‘Investment Trends Monitor’ published on January 19, 2022, FDI flows to India fell by 26% in 2021, owing to big Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) deals made in 2020 not being repeated.
- In 2021, global foreign direct finance flows increased by 77 percent to an anticipated USD 65 trillion, up from USD 929 billion in 2020. Inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) into the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) surged by 35%, with FDI up across the board.
4. India and Denmark have agreed to collaborate on green fuel research and development.
- During a virtual meeting of the Joint Science and Technology (S&T) Committee, India and Denmark inked an agreement to collaborate on joint research and development on green fuels, including green hydrogen. The Joint Committee addressed both countries’ national strategic priorities and advancements in science, technology, and innovation, with a particular focus on future green solutions – a strategy for green research, technology, and innovation investments.
- The committee emphasised the importance of expanding bilateral collaboration on mission-driven research, innovation, and technology development, such as climate and green transition, energy, water, waste, food, and other issues, as agreed by the two Prime Ministers in their Green Strategic Partnership – Action Plan 2020-2025.

7. India’s GDP growth is expected to be 7.6% in FY23, according to Ind-Ra.
- India Ratings & Research (Ind-Ra) forecasted 7.6% real GDP growth in FY23, which is 9.1% higher than the FY20 (pre-COVID-19) level.
- The Indian economy was predicted to be 10.2 percent less than the trend estimate for GDP in FY23. In FY23, the investments are expected to expand 8.7% YoY, as measured by gross fixed capital formation (GFCF). Due to a positive global trade outlook, Ind-Ra anticipates the budget deficit to be 5.8-6.0 percent of GDP in FY23 and goods exports to expand 18.3 percent YoY.

8. IOC acquired a 4.93 percent equity holding in Indian Energy Exchange.
- Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) sold 4.93 percent of its Indian Gas Exchange (IGX) ownership to Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). The India Gas Exchange (IGX) is the country’s first natural gas exchange. It was established to facilitate gas trading in the country. The IEX and the National Stock Exchange are its promoters (NSE).
- Its key investors include GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited), ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited), Torrent Gas Pvt Ltd, and Adani Total Gas Ltd. The federal government has set a goal of increasing gas’s share of the energy sector to 15% by 2030.
9. OneWeb and Hughes Network have agreed to provide satellite broadband services in India for the next six years.
- OneWeb, a worldwide communications business funded by the Bharathi Group, has struck a 6-year distribution agreement with Hughes Network Systems to provide satellite broadband services across India.
- Hughes Communications India Private Ltd (HCIPL), a joint venture between Hughes and Bharti Airtel, will deliver the service. It will provide high-speed, low-latency satellite broadband services, contributing to India’s Digital Vision.

10. Manoj Pande has been named as the Army’s next Vice Chief of Staff.
- The proposal to designate Lieutenant General Manoj Pande, the Eastern Army Commander, as the next Vice Chief of Army Staff was approved by the government.
- Lt Gen CP Mohanty, who is set to retire on January 31, would be succeeded by General Pande. In December 1982, General Pande was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers (The Bombay Sappers). He was the Director-General of Army Headquarters, where he was in charge of matters such as discipline, ceremonial, and welfare.

- Dr. Albert Bourla, Pfizer’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman, has been chosen the Genesis Prize Laureate for 2022 for his work in spearheading the development of the COVID-19 vaccine by the Genesis Prize Foundation.
- The Genesis Prize, dubbed the “Jewish Nobel,” is worth one million dollars. The prize is given to the winner in recognition of their professional accomplishments, contributions to mankind, and adherence to Jewish values.

14. At the age of 112, Saturnino de la Fuente, the world’s oldest man, died.
- Saturnino de la Fuente Garca (112 years and 341 days) was the oldest person alive (male) according to the Guinness World Records. He died at home in León, northwest Spain. Saturnino broke the record for the oldest living person (male) in September 2021, at the age of exactly 112 years and 211 days.
- De la Fuente began working in a shoe factory at the age of 13 as a cobbler. On February 11, 1909, he was born in León’s Puente Castro district.
