National
1. India sets a goal of 400 billion dollars in merchandise exports this fiscal year, says Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. Mr. Goyal spoke with the Industry Associates and discussed ways to improve and expand exports.
- According to him, merchandise shipments increased by 71% from April to August this year compared to 2020-21. India is establishing a SAFE ecosystem — Sustainable, Agile, Futuristic, and Efficient – to make India a global manufacturing hub, according to Mr Goyal.
2. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced the establishment of a 6 lakh crore National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP), a four-year pipeline for infrastructure assets that the government aims to monetise to generate revenue.
- Roads, trains, and power are among the major categories where projects have been identified.
3. Karnataka is the first state in the country to adopt the National Education Policy 2020.
- Karnataka has formally implemented the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020, making it the first state in the country to do so. Dharmendra Pradhan, the Union Minister of Education, effectively began the NEP in the state. On the occasion, the new policy’s Admission module was also unveiled.
- Degree students will be provided iPads for digital learning as part of the digitalization agenda. According to Mr. Bommai, Bengaluru has 180 research and development centres that students can use under the new strategy.
4. Union Minister Jitendra Singh has launched a new Bhuvan “Yuktdhara” portal to aid in the planning of new MGNREGA assets based on remote sensing and GIS data.
- Shri Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, launched a new geospatial planning portal called “Yuktdhara” under Bhuvan on August 23, 2021, to enable the design of new MGNREGA assets utilising remote sensing and GIS data.
5. The Amrit Mahotsav Shri Shakti Challenge 2021 on Women’s Safety and Empowerment is a collaboration between MyGov and UN Women.
- The Amrit Mahotsav Shri Shakti Innovation Challenge 2021 has been launched by MyGov, which is part of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and UN Women.
- The goal of this challenge is to encourage women entrepreneurs to develop technology solutions linked to women’s safety and empowerment.
6. In Connaught Place, Delhi, India’s first smog tower was unveiled.
- In Connaught Place, Delhi, India’s first smog tower has been built. Within a 1 kilometre radius, it will filter 1,000 cubic metres of air each second. Smog towers are tall structures designed to filter the air.
- Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi Chief Minister, unveiled the pollution tower. The smog tower was built as an experimental project, and if it proves to be effective, more smog towers will be built in Delhi.
7. NeoBolt, India’s first indigenous motorised wheelchair vehicle, is developed by IIT Madras.
- IIT Madras has developed the ‘NeoBolt,’ India’s first indigenous motorised wheelchair vehicle that can be utilised not just on roadways but also on uneven terrain.
- It has a top speed of 25 kilometres per hour. It runs on a Lithium-Ion battery and can travel up to 25 kilometres on a single charge.
8. The state of Jammu and Kashmir has launched an online grievance redress system for Kashmiri migrants.
- The state government of Jammu and Kashmir has developed an online grievance redressal platform to address the problems of Kashmiri migrants, making it the first UT to do so.
- The portal can be found on the official website of the JK government under the heading ‘Relief & Rehabilitation (M)’ (www.jkmigrantrelief.nic.in).
International News
9. India has surpassed China as the world’s second-most-desired manufacturing site.
- India has risen to become the world’s second most sought-after manufacturing destination.
- India has eclipsed the United States as the world’s second most coveted manufacturing location, according to Cushman & Wakefield’s 2021 Global Manufacturing Risk Index.
10. India’s and the Philippines’ navies are conducting military drills in the South China Sea.
- In the South China Sea, India conducted a naval exercise with the Philippines, five days after conducting a similar drill with Vietnam in the region, which has seen increased Chinese military expansionism.
- The Indian Navy participated in the exercise with its guided missile destroyer INS Ranvijay and guided missile corvette INS Kora, while the Philippine Navy contributed its frigate BRP Antonio Luna.
11. Sweden produced the world’s first fossil-free steel.
- As the globe tries to combat the harmful effects of greenhouse gas emissions, a Swedish company may be able to help by shifting steel production away from fossil fuels. Hybrit delivered the first batch of “green steel” to Volvo AB, a truck manufacturer in Sweden, as a test run.
- Volvo wants to start producing prototype vehicles utilising green steel by the end of this year, so full-scale production of the material will begin in 2026.
12. In 2022, India will host the second UNWGIC.
- The second United Nations World Geospatial Information Congress (UNWGIC) will be held in Hyderabad, India, in October 2022, with the theme “Towards Geo-enabling the Global Village.”
- The United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) sponsors UNWGIC every four years with the purpose of increasing international collaboration and capability in geospatial information management among member states and all stakeholders.

13. Citibank is the first US bank to open a branch in GIFT City’s IFSC.
- The IFSC Authority granted Citibank a licence to open a banking unit in India’s first International Financial Services Centre in GIFT City, Gujarat. Citibank is headquartered in the United States and has a large international presence.
- Citibank will be the first US bank to open a branch in GIFT-IFSC as a result of this. From this IFSC branch, Citibank will serve both Indian and international customers.
14. For Indian students, ICICI Bank Germany has launched a Blocked Account.
- ICICI Bank Germany, a subsidiary of ICICI Bank, has launched a digital and immediate Blocked Account for students interested in studying in Germany.
- Students can now open an ICICI Bank Germany Student Blocked Account by depositing the requisite money and receiving the BCC. Students in India can open this account online before submitting their Visa applications, without having to visit an ICICI Bank branch.
15. NABARD extends a grant of Rs 24.90 lakh to a fishing project in Tamil Nadu.
- The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has approved a grant of Rs 24.90 lakh for a project in Cuddalore district called the Integrated Mangrove Fishery Farming System (IMFFS).
- The M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) is leading the project, which aims to improve the fishing community’s adaptive potential.
