1. ‘HaPpyShop,’ a non-fuel retail store, was launched by HPCL.
- Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) has made its entrance into the non-fuel retailing industry by launching HaPpyShop, a retail store that would provide clients with everyday necessities at their convenience.
- In September 2021, HPCL opened its first retail store in Mumbai, at the Company’s Retail Outlet on Nepean Sea Road.
2. Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar District hosts the Mandu Festival.
- The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board organises the Mandu Festival every year in Madhya Pradesh. The Hindu God Ganesha is also honoured during the occasion.
- In Mandu, Ujjain, and Indore, the Mandu festival is held. Mandu, also known as Mandavgad, is an ancient city in the Dhar district’s Mandav region. From the 30th of December 2021 to the 3rd of January 2022, the Mandu Festival was held. The Ustad Alauddin Khan Music and Art Academy hosts the 5-day event in partnership with the district administration (Bhopal).
3. The Khijadia Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat and the Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh have been designated as India’s 48th and 49th Ramsar sites, respectively.
- Two new Ramsar sites have been designated: Khijadia Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat and Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh (Wetlands of International Importance). With this, India now has four Ramsar sites. Khijadiya, which is part of the Central Asian Flyway, is the fourth wetland in Gujarat to receive the Ramsar designation.
- Bakhira Wildlife Sanctuary, in the Sant Kabir Nagar district, is a freshwater marsh. It is eastern Uttar Pradesh’s largest natural floodplain marsh.
International News
4. Bungie, a game developer, was purchased by Sony for $3.6 billion.
- Bungie Inc., the U.S. video game developer behind the blockbuster Destiny and Halo franchises, is being purchased by Sony Group Corp. for $3.6 billion to add to its collection of game-making companies.
- Following Microsoft Corp.’s $69 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard Inc. two weeks ago and Take-Two Interactive Corp.’s acquisition of mobile game leader Zynga Inc. on Jan. 10, Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced its third major video-game acquisition this month. Bungie’s acquisition will provide Sony with one of the most popular first-person shooter games to compete with Activision’s big Call of Duty franchise, which Sony’s major opponent currently owns.
5. According to the Brand Finance Report, LIC is the 10th most valuable insurance brand in the world.
- With a worth of $8.656 billion, Life Insurance Corporation is the country’s strongest and largest brand, according to London-based Brand Finance (around Rs 64,722 crore).
- LIC is also placed third in the world in terms of brand strength, behind Italy’s Poste Italiane and Spain’s Mapfre. It is also the tenth most valuable insurance brand in the world. By 2022, the market value of LIC will be Rs 43.40 lakh crore, and by 2027, it will be Rs 58.9 lakh crore. In 2021, LIC will be ranked as the 206th most valuable brand in the world.
6. Antonio Costa has been re-elected as Prime Minister of Portugal.
- Antonio Costa, the Prime Minister of Portugal, was re-elected after his center-left Socialist Party won a huge victory in the 2022 legislative election.
- In the 230-seat Parliament, the Socialist Party won 117 seats. Despite forecasts of a close race, the PSD, the biggest opposition centre-right party, won 27.8% of the vote and 71 seats. Since November 26, 2015, Antonio Costo has been the 119th Prime Minister of Portugal.
7. In Dharchula, India and Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of a motorable bridge across the Mahakali River.
- Under Indian grant assistance, India and Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the construction of a motorable bridge over the Mahakali River between Dharchula (India) and Darchula (Nepal).
- Ambassador of India Vinay Mohan Kwatra and Secretary of Nepal’s Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, Rabindra Nath Shrestha, signed the agreement. The project would improve cross-border communication between Nepal’s Sudurpaschim province and India’s Uttarakhand state, where close people-to-people ties exist on both sides of the border, across the Mahakali River.

8. With the help of NPCI, PNB and Patanjali launched co-branded contactless credit cards.
- In collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India, Punjab National Bank (PNB) and Patanjali Ayurved Limited have launched co-branded contactless credit cards (NPCI).
- The co-branded credit cards are available in two variants: PNB RuPay Platinum and PNB RuPay Select, and are provided on NPCI’s RuPay Platform. Both co-branded cards provide a hassle-free credit service for everyday Patanjali purchases, as well as cash back and loyalty points. On activation, PNB RuPay Platinum and PNB RuPay Select cardholders will receive a 300-point welcome bonus.
9. India’s GDP is expected to expand 7.8% in FY23, according to CRISIL.
- CRISIL, a domestic rating agency, forecasted 7.8% real GDP growth in FY 2022-23, compared to 8.5 percent in the Economic Survey.
- This projection is based on Budget plans that aimed to ease the purse strings by increasing capital spending and deferring fiscal consolidation. Global GDP is anticipated to decelerate this year as major economies remove monetary and fiscal support, according to the agency.
10. Sri Lanka and EXIM Bank signed a $500 million letter of credit deal.
- A $500 million line of credit was arranged between the EXIM Bank of India and the Sri Lankan government. India’s help for gasoline imports from India by Sri Lanka via the LoC is in response to Lanka’s urgent need. This crucial support follows a virtual meeting between EAM S Jaishankar and Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Basil Rajapaksa.
- The goal is to assist Sri Lanka in dealing with its present gasoline shortages, which are causing one of the country’s biggest economic meltdowns.

11. The Director-General of NIELIT has been named Madan Mohan Tripathi.
- The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology has a new Director-General, Madan Mohan Tripathi (NIELIT).
- Dr Madan Mohan Tripathi was a Professor at Delhi Technological University (DTU) in New Delhi before joining NIELIT. He was also Director of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Coordinator of the Intellectual Property Rights Cell at DTU. The National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) is a government of India-run independent entity under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
13. Hrithik Roshan has been named as the ‘RummyCircle’ Brand Ambassador by Games 24×7.
- Hrithik Roshan, a well-known Bollywood actor, has been named as the brand ambassador for ‘RummyCircle,’ an online skill gaming platform, by Games24x7. Hrithik Roshan will promote RummyCircle’s multimedia campaigns across several channels, including TV, digital, and social media, as part of the relationship. Starting on January 29, the brand will launch its new campaign #RahoEkKadamAage, featuring Hrithik Roshan, with a television advertisement.
- Ranveer Singh served as a brand ambassador for Games24x7’s fantasy gaming platform ‘My11Circle’ in 2021. RummyCircle, My11Circle, Carrom, and U-Games are among the online gaming brands represented by Games24x7.

13. Daryl Mitchell of New Zealand won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award 2021.
- In the high-pressure 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Semi-Finals versus England at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, New Zealand cricketer Darryl Mitchell was crowned the recipient of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Spirit of Cricket Award 2021 for his gesture of refusing to take a single.
- After Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum, and Kane Williamson, he is the fourth New Zealand player to receive the trophy. The ICC Spirit of Cricket Award is presented yearly by the ICC to the player who best exemplifies the “Spirit of the Game.”
14. Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award nominee Neeraj Chopra
- Neeraj Chopra, a gold medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, has been nominated for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award in 2022.
- Daniil Medvedev (Australian Open runner-up), Emma Raducanu (British tennis player), Pedri (Barcelona and Spain footballer), Yulimar Rojas (Venezuelan athlete), and Ariarne Titmus (Venezuelan athlete) are the other five nominees (Australian swimmer). Following a vote by the Laureus World Sports Academy, which is comprised of 71 sporting legends, the winners will be announced in April.

15. J Sai Deepak’s book ‘India, That is Bharat: Coloniality, Civilisation, and Constitution’
- J Sai Deepak has written a trilogy of books titled ‘India, That is Bharat: Coloniality, Civilisation, Constitution,’ which is published by Bloomsbury India. The first portion was released on August 15, 2021, and the second part will be released in June 2022. The third and last instalment will be released in June 2023.
- It is the first instalment of a three-part series that investigates the impact of European ‘colonial consciousness’ (or ‘coloniality’) on Bharat (India). It demonstrates how colonialism alters India’s socio-religious culture, history, education, language, and race patterns.

16. World Interfaith Harmony Week is held from the 1st through the 7th of February.
- After the General Assembly designated World Interfaith Harmony Week in 2010, it has become an annual event held during the first week of February. The goal of World Interfaith Harmony Week (WIHW) is to promote cultural peace and nonviolence. The World Interfaith Harmony Week is built on The Common Word initiative’s groundbreaking work.
- This effort, which began in 2007, calls for Muslim and Christian leaders to engage in discussion based on two essential religious Commandments: love of God and love of neighbour, without jeopardising their own religious beliefs.
