National
1. The ‘Pani Maah’ campaign in Ladakh aims to speed up the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission.
- The Union Territory of Ladakh has begun a month-long campaign called “Pani Maah” (water month) with the goal of speeding up the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission in the UT and educating and engaging local populations about the need of clean water.
- In two phases, ‘Pani Maah’ is being implemented at the Block and Panchayat levels. According to an official release from the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the first phase would run from August 1-14 and the second phase will run from August 16-30, 2021.
2. NFDB signs an agreement with PNB to provide financial assistance to the fishing industry.
- The National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB), which is part of the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairy, has signed an MoU with Punjab National Bank, the country’s largest bank, to provide financial support through the bank.
- The Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) was established by the government in 2018-19 with a total fund size of Rs 7,522.48 crore, with Rs 5,266.40 crore to be raised by Nodal Lending Entities (NLE) such as NABARD, NCDC, and all scheduled banks.
3. The first biobank for heart failure research in India has been established.
- The Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology opened the country’s first National Heart Failure Biobank (NHFB), which will gather blood, biopsies, and clinical data to help guide future medicines (SCTIMST).
- The facility will be useful for post-Covid heart failure research and treatment.
- Mechanical freezers that can keep bio-samples at minus 20 to minus 80 degrees and a liquid nitrogen storage device that can store bio-samples at minus 140 degrees for years are among the storage facilities.
- Nearly 25,000 bio-samples can currently be stored in facilities.
4. In the beginning, Maldives-style water villas will be built in Lakshadweep.
- Lakshadweep will soon have water villas comparable to those found in the Maldives, a first in India.
- Water villas would be built at a cost of Rs 800 crore to entice tourists to Lakshadweep’s picturesque charm, according to Lakshadweep Administrator Praful Khoda Patel.
5. Haryana signs a memorandum of understanding with Wallmart Vridi and Haqdarshak to promote MSME products on the worldwide market.
- Haryana Government inked an MoU with ‘Walmart Vriddhi’ and ‘Haqdarshak’ companies to ensure a pipeline for MSME products to reach the international market.
- The MoUs were signed in the presence of Dushyant Chautala, the Haryana Deputy Chief Minister in charge of the Industries Department.
6. During the pandemic, the government reduces the Mudra loan objective dramatically.
- The government has set a target of Rs 3 trillion for loan disbursement under the PM Mudra Yojana (PMMY) for the current financial year, down from Rs 3.21 trillion sanctioned in FY21. The reduced objective is attributed to higher allocation under the loan guarantee scheme for small firms, according to experts.
- According to official data, entrepreneurs received Rs 3.12 trillion of the Rs 3.21 trillion in loans sanctioned under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) in the previous financial year.
Banking & Finance News
7. The deadline for implementing current account rules has been extended to October 31 by the RBI.
- Following reports of small businesses having their accounts frozen in recent days, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given banks till October 31 to implement reforms in terms of handling current accounts.
- The initial deadline had passed on July 31, causing banks to close or freeze thousands of current accounts. Lenders have asked the RBI for more time to resolve operational challenges with implementing the August 2020 circular’s provisions in letter and spirit.
8. NABARD collaborates with CWC to assist farmers.
- Farmers, particularly small and marginal farmers, would be permitted to use the state-owned Central Warehouse Corporation’s (CWC) warehousing facilities to store their produce.
- The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development said that it has partnered with CWC to improve storage.
- Though this one-of-a-kind arrangement is primarily aimed at farmers who are members of farmer producer organisations (FPOs), it might be extended to individual farmers as well.

9. Dhriti Banerjee has been appointed as the first woman director of the Indian Zoological Survey.
- Dhriti Banerjee has been selected as the first woman to lead the 105-year-old Zoological Survey of India (ZSI).
- The 51-year-old has a distinguished scientific career that includes work in taxonomy, zoogeography, morphology, and molecular systematics. Since 2012, she has served as the coordinator of ZSI’s Digital Sequence Information Project.
10. Sjoerd Marijne resigns as coach of the Indian women’s hockey team.
- Sjoerd Marijne announced that he will be stepping down as coach of the Indian women’s national hockey team just hours after they came fourth in the Tokyo Olympics and won the hearts of Indian supporters.
- The 47-year-old led India’s women’s hockey team to their best-ever finish at the Tokyo Olympics, bringing them to a respectable fourth place.
Sports News
11. Jan-Krzysztof Duda of Poland won the FIDE World Cup 2021, defeating GM Sergey Karjakin of Russia comfortably in his white game, avoiding a tiebreak.
- The 23-year-old Polish grandmaster was undefeated in the competition and won USD 88,000. Karjakin took second place and, like Duda, qualified for the FIDE Candidates Tournament in 2022.

12. Bhutan’s Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project, which was aided by India, has been awarded the Brunel Medal.
- The Brunel Medal was given by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in London to Bhutan’s India-assisted Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project.
- The award was presented to Chairman, Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Authority Lyonpo Loknath Sharma by Indian envoy to Bhutan Ruchira Kamboj as a signal of achievement in civil engineering within the sector.

- Rudrangshu Mukherjee’s book, titled “A Begum and a Rani,” was recently published.

Obituary News
14. SS ‘Babu’ Narayan, an Olympian footballer from India, has died.
- Shankar Subramaniam, alias Babu, Nayaran, a two-time Olympian, died. Nayaran, India’s goalie at the 1956 and 1960 Olympics, died at the age of 86.
- Apart from representing Maharashtra in football and basketball, Narayan has established himself as one of India’s most dependable goalkeepers. During his ten-year tenure with the national team, he was part of India’s fourth-place result at the 1956 Olympics and his participation in the 1964 Asian Games.
