1. Rlys announces 6 ‘Shramik Special’ trains to ferry stranded migrant workers, students
- The railways said it will run “Shramik Special” trains from “Labour Day” on May 1 to move migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and other persons stranded at different places due to the nationwide lockdown that came into force from March 25.
- The railways announced six “Shramik Special” trains — Lingampally to Hatia, Nasik to Lucknow, Aluva to Bhubaneswar, Nasik to Bhopal, Jaipur to Patna, and Kota to Hatia.
2. 400th Prakash Purab of Guru Tegh Bahadur
- On May 1, 2021, India is celebrating the four-hundredth Prakash Purab of Guru Tegh Bahadur. He was the ninth Sikh Guru.
- He was born in Amritsar, Punjab in 1621. He was the youngest son of Guru Hargobind Sahib. He wrote 115 hymns that were included in Guru Granth Sahib.

3. GST revenues touch an all-time high of ₹1.41 lakh in April
- Gross revenues from the Goods and Services Tax hit a record high of ₹41 lakh crore in April 2021, suggesting economic activity may not yet be as badly affected amidst the ongoing second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, as last year.

4. NATO Military Joint Exercises launched with Albania
- The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation recently launched the joint military exercises in Albania called the “DEFENDER-Europe 21”. Thousands of military forces from the US are participating in the exercise.

5. India lose top spot in ICC Test rankings to Australia
India lost the top spot in the ICC Test rankings to Australia dropping to third after their stupendous 2016-17 record was eliminated from the annual update as per rules.
India yielded the top spot in Test rankings for the first time since October 2016 but continue to lead the ICC World Test Championship, a league comprising six series played by each of the top nine sides

6. Ramesh Babu V takes over as director of operations at NTPC
- State-owned power giant NTPC announced that Ramesh Babu V has assumed charge as director of operations at NTPC, effective May 1.

7. Manipur black rice, Gorakhpur terracotta & Kovilpatti kadalai mittai gets GI tag
Chak-Hao, the scented glutinous rice popularly known as Black Rice cultivated in Manipur, has got GI (Geographical Indications).
- Besides this, the terracotta work of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh has also received the GI Tag.
- Also, Kovilpatti kadalai mittai, a peanut candy, from Tamil Nadu has also bagged GI tag.
8. Sania Mirza Becomes First Indian To Be Nominated For Fed Cup Heart Award
- Indian tennis star Sania Mirza became the first Indian to be nominated for the Fed Cup Heart Award from the Asia/Oceania zone along with Indonesia’s Priska Medelyn Nugrorho.
9. Indian-origin girl gets honour of naming Nasa’s first Mars helicopter
- Nasa’s first Mars helicopter has a name now and the credit goes to 17-year-old Indian-origin girl Vaneeza Rupani.
- Rupani, a high school junior from Northport, Alabama, earned the honour of naming the helicopter after she submitted her essay into NASA’s “Name the Rover” contest.
10. Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun honour to Bengaluru Teacher Shyamala Ganesh
- The Japanese Government recently awarded the “Order of Rising Sun” to a Bengaluru based Japanese teacher, Shyamala Ganesh.
- Shyamala is a Japanese teacher at the Septuagenarian institution and also at the Ohara School of Ikebana in RT Nagar, Bengaluru. She has tutored more than hundreds of students since its inception 38 years ago. Ikebana is the Japanese art of flower arrangement.
OBITUARIES
11.Veteran anti-apartheid activist Denis Goldberg passes away
Denis Goldberg, the South African anti-apartheid campaigner who worked closely with Nelson Mandela, has died aged 87.
Goldberg was jailed in 1964 on treason charges and spent 22 years in a Pretoria prison.
12. Veteran scribe Ronald Vivian Smith dies at 82
- Eminent author and columnist Ronald Vivian Smith, who is best known for his writings on Delhi, breathed his last at a hospital. He was 81.
- Mr Smith, who retired as News Editor of The Statesman in 1996 after a long career that began with Press Trust of India (PTI), had been unwell for some time. Author of several books and two widely read newspaper columns, ‘Quaint Places’ and ‘Down Memory Lane’, he was a marvellous raconteur of all things to do with the history of Delhi and Agra, his native town where he spent his early year.
13. ‘Shooter Dadi’ Chandro Tomar passed away
- Shooter Chandro Tomar, nicknamed ‘Shooter Dadi’, passed away at the age of 89 due to Covid-19 on 30th April.
- Hailing from the Baghpat village in Uttar Pradesh, Tomar was 60-plus when she picked up the gun for the first time but went on to win many national competitions for veterans, her feats ultimately inspiring the award-winning Bollywood movie ‘Saand ki Aankh’.
